CES Logo 2006 International CES Alumni Registration is Now Open!

“As a valued International CES Alumnus, you can be among the first to view the hottest new products and technologies for 2006. Register now for the upcoming International CES January 5-8, 2006 — North America’s largest trade-only technology show. As a returning attendee, you can speed through the registration process. It’s so easy to register. Just enter your personal alumni # and password (provided below), verify your current information and you’re done! Registration has never been so quick and simple. And if you register now, it’s free.”

I received this email yesterday and promptly registered. This will be my fourth CES conference. I plan to blog everyday from the conference, and maybe, just maybe, do a podcast each day. Of course I will have my camera at the ready. You can see some of last years photos in the gallery. (Note: I recently switched to flickr and don’t have everything loaded yet.)

Last year I had to watch Bill Gate’s speech from a satellite room, hopefully this year I will get in line early enough to be in the real thing. Although I hear they gave most of the seats to press people. But hey, I should be considered press too right?

Podcast Popularity Growing

Posted in Podcasting, Technology Trends on June 18th, 2005

iPod A new report shows that the use of podcasting will grow 101% per year until the year 2010. It is estimated that 60 million Americans will listen to podcasts by 2010. Going from less than 15% of portable digital music player owners to 75% in the next 5 years.

In other news, because of my recent post about a local podcast, I was interviewed by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

While at work in Middletown, computer software developer David Breyer likes to download “podcasts” - audio files to play on his iPod digital music player - for his 45-minute commute home to Kenwood.

Usually he listens to discussions about computer technology in his Hyundai Elantra, but in recent weeks he’s loaded a podcast of Channel 9’s noon news, the first Cincinnati TV station to offer such digital-audio files published on the Internet.

“I listen to it mostly to hear the weather,” says Breyer, 30, who bought his iPod in February.

You can, and should, read the full text of Can’t stay up for the news? Podcasting offers alternative at the Cincinnati Enquirer’s site. I later found out that the reporter that interviewed me, who is from Middletown, Ohio, actually went to school with someone I work with. Truly a small world after all.

I will also take this time to announce that Derek Reynolds and I are currently working on our own podcast. Working being a relative term. Trying to find the time to sit down and record something is a challenge. It was delayed for the past week, while I tried to setup the recording environment. Well here’s to hoping we have something out by next week. In the mean time, try listening to The Adventures of Superman or vote on what OTR (old time radio) show I should podcast next.

List of Old Time Radio broadcasts

Posted in Podcasting on June 17th, 2005

I told Bryan Sime I would post a list of OTR broadcasts I have on MP3. I recently starting podcasting the Adventures of Superman, a radio show that started in 1939. Of which I probably have more than a thousand episodes.

List of OTR programs:

  • CBS Radio Mystery Theatre - 100’s and 100’s, don’t ask me to count them. They encompass 20 CDs.
  • Superman - 6 CDs
  • The Whistler - 3 CDs
  • The Sealed Book - 26 episodes
  • Lights Out - 30 episodes
  • Weird Circle - 77 episodes
  • CBS Radio Adventure Theatre - 50 episodes
  • Nero Wolfe - 23 episodes
  • Quiet Please - 88 episodes
  • Inner Sanctum - 76 episodes
  • Suspense - 8 CDs

Since so many people shown interest in the Superman podcast, I thought I could put another OTR show up on podcast. Let me know if anyone has a suggestion.

The Linux iPod

Posted in Hardware, Software, Open Source, Hacks on June 17th, 2005

Tux Imagine using your iPod and a regular old microphone to record studio-quality audio. Or sitting on a commuter train and playing Othello, Pong, Tetris, or Asteroids. All this and more is possible when you install Linux on your third-generation or earlier iPod. Best of all, one soft reset, and you’re back in Apple’s iPod operating system, listening to your tunes.

This has been around for a while, but this is the best article I have seen on the subject. And honestly, this is just cool.

Lotus Notes .NET Integration News

Posted in Programming, .NET, Technology Trends, Software, Links on June 16th, 2005

I don’t know what it is. But there appears to be a revival in Lotus Notes. I am not sure if it because Lotus Notes 7 beta 3 is out or because there is already talk of version 8? But my bloglines had three, yes three, links referring to Lotus Notes today.

First Microsoft has two new webcasts related to Lotus Notes:
Optimizing Sharepoint for the Lotus Notes Customer
Integrating MS Office 2003 with Lotus Notes/Domino

I also found a Lotus Notes .NET Integration Page which features a Lotus Notes .NET Integration Toolkit, a Domino web service demo, and many more examples.

That’s all for now.

UPDATE: Make that four links today for Lotus Notes.

Space shuttle heads back to Florida launch pad

Posted in Technology Trends on June 16th, 2005

Space Shuttle Space shuttle Discovery moved back to its Florida launch pad on Wednesday, a critical step in NASA’s plan to return its shuttle fleet to flight next month after a hiatus of more than two years.

I will be excited to see the shuttle finally launch again.

The Adventures of Superman

Posted in Podcasting on June 14th, 2005

I setup a podcast of the original 1939 radio broadcast of Superman. Each day I will add the next installment of The Adventures of Superman. Each episode is roughly 10-15 minutes. Superman aired from 1939 to 1946. The format is MP3, and they sound good given the age of the recording.

You do not need podcasting software to listen to them. You can manually download each episode. But a better idea would be to get iPodder (or another podcasting client.)

You have died of Dysentery
Who didn’t play Oregan Trail in elementary school? Those of us to poor to afford a computer. Thanks for opening old wounds! Jerk!

Well now is your chance to play this classic Apple game. Head over to the Virtual Apple and get yourself on the trail. Just watch out for cattle rustlers. Warning: Virtual Apple runs in a ActiveX control. So you have to use I.E. And I am not sure if it actually runs on a Mac. Ouch, watch where your throwing that irony!

OH, and to be a real nerd, pick up a Oregan Trail tee at bustedtees.com.
